Getting cited by the answer engines

Entities, schema and the boring work that makes AI quote you.

When someone asks an AI assistant where to buy a car, who does it name? That answer is not magic and it is not random. Answer engines build their responses from the same raw material search engines have always used: clear pages, consistent business information and content that actually answers the question being asked. The difference is that AI tools are far less forgiving of vague, thin or contradictory information.

I track this for clients as AI visibility: how often a business shows up, and shows up correctly, when real people ask real questions in AI tools. The businesses that get cited are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones whose information is the easiest to trust.

Start with entities, not keywords

An entity is just a thing the machine can identify with confidence: your business, your location, your services, your people. If your site says one thing, your listings say another, and your social profiles say a third, the machine has three weak guesses instead of one strong answer. Consistency is the whole game. Same name, same address, same services, described the same way, everywhere you appear.

Schema is the label maker

Structured data is not glamorous. It is a label maker for your website. It tells machines, explicitly, this is a local business, these are its hours, this is a service page, this is a review. You would never ship a filing cabinet with no labels on the drawers. Schema is the same idea, applied to your site. It is boring, it is unglamorous, and it works.

Write answers, not brochures

AI tools quote content that answers questions directly. A page that says we pride ourselves on excellence tells the machine nothing. A page that says here is what this service costs, here is how long it takes, here is who it is for, gives the machine something worth repeating. Every important page on your site should answer a real question in plain language, near the top, without making anyone dig for it.

  • Audit your business name, address and services across every listing and profile. Fix every mismatch.
  • Add or clean up structured data on your key pages: local business, services, reviews, FAQs.
  • Rewrite your top pages so each one answers one real customer question in the first two sentences.
  • Keep your content current. Answer engines favor sources that look maintained, not abandoned.
